A special for every now & then, "How To Tuesday"! Part 3 of 3. I'll demonstrate casting on with Judy's Magic Cast On to start toe up socks two at a time with 1 skein! The perfect way to avoid the dreaded "Second Sock Syndrome" & not have to divide your skein!

Talking about...
*What the technique is (Toe up socks, Two at a time socks, Magic Loop socks, Judy's Magic Cast On with 1 skein.)
*Why use it? (You can make 2 socks at the same time with (1) 100g skein, without having to divide your skein and weigh it out! For other reasons why I like this technique check out the first video in this series: How to Tuesday: Let's Talk About Making Socks 2 at a Time! (LINK TO VIDEO)
*What you'll need (A circular needle with a flexible cable, typically 40" are used but a 32" or 36" will work. (I like Lykkes or Knit Picks myself. There are others like Knitter's Pride or Addis - but I have not to date used them and cannot vouch for their efficacy or durability.) I wouldn't go any smaller than that as you won't have enough cable to work with. Yarn! These are just the things you need to start this cast on, not including any other materials, tools, or notions you need for your actual pattern!)
*Other Considerations (Take a little care not to tangle your strands. This is done simply by turning your skein as you work to make sure the correct strand is on the correct side. When working from 1 skein, you will be working from the inside & the outside of the skein. It's also worth considering having some contrast between the color of your yarn & your needles. This will make seeing the stitches on the needle easier. Also do yourself a favor and have good light!)
You only work on one side, with one skein, with one needle & one stitch at a time (no need to freak out). It's not hard when you think about what you're doing & you take your time.
Don't be alarmed at the needle size...it does get easier, and as you work smaller needles larger ones are easier to use too!
*Demo Notes: (#1 I took the time to re-wind my skeins so they're nice & neat. I'll be using my US 1/2.25 mm I'll be working with Lion Brand's Sock-Ease, "Taffy" colorway. Leave a good amount of slack in your tail as you'll be using this up - similar to the Long Tail Cast On. When starting socks toe up you're not using a terribly large amount of stitches, but underestimating the slack means you'll have to start over. When wrapping the yarn about the needles you will always wrap from the bottom up with the opposite yarn side - top with bottom strand, bottom with top strand. And as with all cast ons, try to not to work the stitches too tightly as it will make working the first round more difficult. As a bonus, scroll to see what it looks like to work your first round!)
