St. Neophytos basilica remnants have surfaced from Lake Iznik in Bursa when water levels in the lake reduced lately, according to the daily Daily Sabah.
Air pictures of the lake revealed the submerged remains of the Byzantine church barely 20 meters from the lake's shores, which had been thought to date back to the 4th or 5th century AD. The basilica in northwest Turkey was found after aerial images of the lake were taken.
Despite the basilica's submergence having been identified as early as 2014, water levels in the area have dropped precipitously when a drought hit in 2014.
Early Christian religious and cultural center in the Byzantine and early Christian eras, with Nicaea being the site of the First Ecumenical Council when the Nicene Creed was decided upon. Early Christian architecture can be seen in the basilica.
In 740 AD, an earthquake is supposed to have caused the church to sink into the lake. It's been about two years since the first archaeological digs started, and a number of significant items have been unearthed.
