Faking DID on Tiktok (and other mental disorders) on social media is an internet trend that has been prevalent for years now. The participating kids trade alters of their favourite anime/video game/pop culture characters (and youtubers!) like they're Pokemon cards, and they update their arsenal based on what's popular online at the time. The current obsession? Hazbin hotel, a 2018 Patreon-funded show by a self-publishing animation creator. The issue? Apart from the faking, the questionable dark themes and timeline both highlight inconsistencies that don't adhere to the criteria for DID in the DSM-5. They continue to add to the negative stereotypes and misinformation on DID with their new animated interest; the debilitating effects on those suffering with the mental illness are lost on them as these fakers rarely face the consequences of their actions, especially as their relatable faux headmates gain them clout among their peers. Today, we'll break down some of the lies they spread, and explain why the legitimacy of their claims are very unlikely...with cringy examples of course!
