In 1927 Walter Gropius designed the employment office of the city of Dessau.
Gropius, like so many other of his colleagues in those days, worked on ideas to zone cities and public spaces in such a way that form and function would merge. The round building of the Employment Office is a classic example. There were several entrances that led the visitors directly to the departments concerned and when you were finished you would not miss the exit. This principle of open doors and low thresholds was in fact a masterpiece. If you had the courage at the beginning of the 20th century to design an employment office in such a way that the impoverished visitors did not have to wait a long time to receive some financial aid to obtain food, then you had hit a bull's eye. Like those bodies that in 2002/03 have shown the courage to restore the run-down building.
Walter Gropius really became famous with the transparent glass architecture of the Bauhaus building. Gropius designed the building as a well functioning cover that would bring the outside world in, and let the inside world out. His Bauhaus educational theory was 'art and technology, a new unity'.
