Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856, in Smiljan, Croatia, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His father was a Serbian Orthodox priest and his mother was the daughter of another priest. Tesla was the fourth of five children and showed an early interest in engineering and electricity.

After attending primary school in Smiljan, Tesla went on to study at the Higher Real Gymnasium in Karlstadt (now Karlovac) and then at the Polytechnic School in Graz, Austria. At the Polytechnic School, he studied physics, mathematics, and mechanics and became interested in electrical engineering.
