One flash can be limiting, two flashes are better and three flashes... well, that’s when things can become very confusing very quickly. The more lights you use in your studio portraits, the more you need to be on top of exactly what each is adding to the image.
In this video, Gavin Hoey goes back to basics, so if you’re stepping up to a multi-flash set-up for the first time, this is the video for you. Gavin begins by explaining the difference between channels and groups and then moves on to give a very real demonstration of why using all your flashes at once is the quickest way to get confused.
As Gavin explains, the simplest way to set up three flashes is to slow down and start by setting the exposure for just one light. Once he has this correct, Gavin adds a second and then a third flash in the same way. Using this simple set and check method Gavin sets up a classic three-point lighting look that's perfect for corporate headshots and family portraits.
But this basic three-point lighting pattern is also super flexible. By attaching colored gels to all the lights, adding some simple styling for his model, and boosting the saturation in Photoshop (or Lightroom Classic), Gavin transforms a safe and sensible corporate lighting pattern into something super colorful and very eye-catching without moving any lights.
