Photosynthesis is a chemical process that captures light energy and converts it to chemical energy. Plants, algae, and some bacteria use light energy and building blocks, such as water and carbon dioxide, from their environments to produce energy-rich carbohydrates. In the process of making organic molecules to fuel their own lives, producers release oxygen into our atmosphere and provide food for almost all living organisms on Earth.
