Seollal or Korean Lunar New Year falls on the first day of the Korean lunar calendar and the
most celebrated traditional holiday in Korea. During this ceremony, people perform ancestral ceremonies, pay respect to their elders, and share well-wishes.
Charye is a memorial ceremony for ancestors that is frequently performed in a Sadang a
traditional shrine on Seollal.
The last step of the ritual, termed "eumbok," involves both genders consuming the dish and
thereby earning the ancestors' blessing for the coming year.
The cuisine served at the charye ceremony varies by area, usually rice, soup, meat, seafood,

CHUSEOK
Chuseok, also known as Gabae, Gawee, Hangawi, or Jungchujeol, falls on the 15th day of
August on the lunar calendar.
