Professor Julio Teehankee of De La Salle University, Manila, speaks about how President Rodrigo Duterte's government has responded to the COVID pandemic, and the broader trends in the reaction of populist leaders.
Julio Teehankee is Full Professor and Research Fellow of Political Science and International Studies at De La Salle University, Manila (DLSU). He served as the President of Asian Political and International Studies Association (APISA) from 2009 to 2011 and the Philippine Political Science Association (PPSA) from 2016 to 2019. Currently, he represents the Philippines in the Council of the International Political Science Association (IPSA). Prof. Teehankee specializes in the comparative analysis of politics and development in East and Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on issues of popular participation, governance, democratization, and contested institutions. He has published extensively on the topics of elections, party politics, and political dynasties. His current research includes presidentialism in Asia; comparative constitutional dynamics in East and Southeast Asia; and the post-crisis development architecture.
