STORYLINE
Uneasy calm returned to the capital of Tunisia on Monday, a day after tensions appeared to erupt between Tunisians buoyant over the departure of autocratic President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and loyalists in danger of losing major perks built up under his patronage.
Authorities on Sunday arrested the top presidential security chief and tried to stop gunfights that erupted in and beyond Tunis.
One clash broke out around the deposed president's palace on the Mediterranean shore, another near the headquarters of the main opposition party.
On Monday, security forces were seen manning strategic positions in the capital, whilst locals ventured out on the streets, taking advantage of the calm to stock up on essentials.
Observers worldwide are looking to see which way the North African nation will turn as its new leadership seeks to tamp down the looting, arson and random violence that has taken place since Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia on Friday.
