Anaerobic digestion represents an innovative marriage of waste disposal and energy production, but suffers from inefficient conversion of waste into methane. A new method for pretreating biowastes with Caldicellulosiruptor bescii, a lignocelluytic hyperthermophile, can significantly increase energy output and waste disposal by anaerobic digestion. C. bescii has the ability to break down the toughest organic polymers in plant material—unlocking more carbon for conversion to methane gas. Various wastes predigested with C. bescii produced double the amount of methane gas as controls. The process is described in a paper entitled “Enhancing waste degradation and biogas production by pre-digestion with a hypothermophilic anaerobic bacterium”.
