As a hobbyist indie game developer, I find it inspiring to hear about the hit indie game successes. Although financial outcomes definitely aren't everything, hearing indie game dev success stories helps with a bit of motiviation, especially when game dev burnout is hitting hard.
Despite the odds, there are a handful of very talented solo indie game developers and game designers that have achieved unparalleled levels of success. So I think its beneficial to hear some more of those game dev stories for a bit of inspiraton!
Here are some of the most successful indie games developed by a single person!
First is Kenshi, developed by Christ Hunt and Lo-Fi Games, and released in 2013. Kenshi features a massive open world, where you can do almost anything. Since its release, Kenshi has sold over 1 million copies and made an estimated revenue of $32 million.
Papers, Please is a dystopian border simulator, solo developed by Lucas Pope and released also in 2013. Papers, Please released to massive accolades and was nominated for several awards. Its estimated that Papers, Please has sold over 1.8 million copies and pulled in almost $10 million of revenue.
Geometry dash is one of the most famous mobile indie games ever. First developed by Robert "RobTop" Topala and released in 2013, Geometry Dash is a true indie dev smash mobile success with over $21 million in revenue.
For a indie game fan favorite, Five Nights at Freddy's was solo developed by Scott Cawthon and released in 2014. FNAF has become so popular that there are now a ton of spinoff games, a graphic novel series, and even a rumored movie project. Cawthon has an estimated net worth of $70 million from the entire FNAF franchise.
Bright Memory was solo developed by Zeng Xiancheng and released on steam in 2019. Bright Memory is a fast paced magical FPS. Bright Memory and its successor Bright Memory: Infinite have a combined estimated revenue of $16 million.
Lastly is the metroidvania Axiom Verge, solo built by Thomas Happ, and released in 2015. With a classic pixel art style and vibe, Axiom Verge has reached $1.7 million in revenue just on Steam alone!
