(11 May 1974) RR7419A END OF THE BRANDT ERA
In his eight years of government, Willy Brandt
revolutionised East-West relations. He reconciled
West Germany with its former war-time enemies in
Eastern Europe. He recognised East Germany as a
separate state and helped to usher in the era of
detente. He was the first German Chancellor to visit
Israel. He was Germany's first Socialist Chancellor for
40 years. Although he resigned over a spy scandal, he
is known to have been despondent in recent months
about party squabbles and economic problems, and
his friends claim he wanted to get out. This report
looks at the landmarks in his brilliant career.
