Eggs are popular around the world and are consumed a number of different ways. They are a great way to get protein and also provide healthy amino acids and antioxidants. When buying eggs, it is important that we try to purchase organic eggs if possible, as these eggs are free from unwanted antibiotics, hormones and vaccines. White and brown eggs both offer important health benefits for our bodies. Lets discuss some of these health benefits of consuming eggs on a consistent basis.
1. First, eggs can help boost and improve our overall immune system. This is because they are rich in a number of important vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Perhaps most important for our immune system is that they are rich in selenium, which supports the immune system and also helps to regulate thyroid hormones. In only one large egg, we can get about 22% of our daily recommended intake of selenium.
2. Eggs can also help to improve both our skin and hair. Eggs are rich in multiple types of B-complex vitamins, which are necessary for healthy skin and hair. Eggs contain good amounts of vitamins B2, B5 and B12. As well, eggs help with the proper functioning of our nervous system, which can promote the overall health of our skin and hair.
3. They can also reduce the risk of heart disease. We know that LDL cholesterol is bad for our overall heart health since it can lead to build-up in the arteries. However, when it comes to LDL particles, those with predominately small, dense particles have a greater risk of heart disease than those with mostly large LDL particles. Studies have shown that when eggs are consumed, it converts small and dense LDL particles to large ones, lowering the risk of cardiovascular problems.
4. Eggs will also improve your energy levels and can be very beneficial for those individuals who are working out or find themselves feeling sluggish during the day. Just one egg contains about 15% of your daily recommended intake of riboflavin, a healthy B vitamin. This helps to convert the food we eat into fuel, which can then be used by our bodies to produce energy.
5. They can also help to protect and promote the health of our eyes. This is because eggs contain two antioxidants known as lutein and zeaxanthin, which have powerful protective effects on our eyes. To obtain these benefits for our eyes however, it is important that we are consuming the yolk of the egg, as this is where these antioxidants are found.
6. Eggs can also help to improve the health of our bones and teeth. Vitamin D is important for the overall health and strength of our bones and teeth, and eggs are one of the few natural sources of this vitamin. The vitamin D found in eggs helps with the absorption of calcium, improving the overall health of our bones and teeth, as well as promoting the health of our heart, colon and metabolism.
7. Lastly, eggs can actually help to improve your cholesterol profile. We have all heard about eggs and cholesterol levels. One large egg contains about 212 mg’s of cholesterol. There are two types of cholesterol, HDL, known as the good type, and LDL, known as the bad type. The ratio between HDL and LDL cholesterol is important for our health. Eggs do contain cholesterol, but this does not mean that it will raise the bad type in the blood, and studies have shown that eggs appear to raise good HDL cholesterol when consumed.
