Sittin' On top of the World, from Doc at 100, featuring Wayne Henderson and Jack Hinshelwood
Doc at 100 explored the history and legacy of Doc Watson, who was born in Deep Gap, N.C., in 1923, and went on to become one of the most influential acoustic guitar players in the world of folk music. Hosted by author Ted Olson, the concert program celebrates the anniversary of what would have been Doc Watson’s 100th birthday and honors his life and legacy with performances, stories and songs by artists who performed with him, who were profoundly influenced by his music, and who called him a friend. Musicians in this project included T. Michael Coleman, Jack Lawrence, Wayne Henderson, and Jack Hinshelwood.
Sittin’ on top of the world was written by Walter Vinson, and was first recorded and released by Mississippi Sheiks 1930. Doc Watson recorded it in 1964.
It was also recorded by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys in 1936, Bill Monroe in 1957, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee in 1965, The Grateful Dead in 1967, Ralph Stanley and Hi Clinch Mountain Boys in 1971, and many, many more.
