2016 Fall was an interesting period to say the least. It was nice putting this compilation together. I apologize if I did not make the kind of compilation that was probably expected of me. But, in my defence, I was looking to cover the most important details, while avoiding too much repetition or stagnation. The result? Well, a nice simple run through very nicely coexisting performances that flow well together. You have the last to date performances of Rainy Day Women and Masters of War, along with the only Like a Rolling Stone of 2016 (and the only performance between 2013 and 2018). Along with those, you have the song of the hour - High Water. It's not often you see Dylan experiment so much with a song a little bit on every show like he did here. I've covered some of the most diverse and memorable ones that showcase the evolution nicely. There's one where Bob even plays the guitar, one of only two times in 2016 overall - it was very rare in this era that Bob played guitar at all. You may think there's too much High Water, but before you think that, see for yourself. I believe you may be a bit surprised.
So, with so many High Water performances in need to be showcased to the world, I already knew I was in for an atypical compilation, even for me. But well, I somehow found a way to make it work, so much that I surprised myself even. I treated it as if it was a live rehearsal - like Bob was rehearsing his songs with his band in front of an audience, which is why I can say there's multiple performances of certain songs and not just High Water. So I really hope you enjoy this unlikely treat here. It's atypical - but it's worth it. I'm sure. See for yourself and tell me. Although some of these High Water performances may seem very similar or the same to you, if you pay close attention, you'll hear that they got something different going on, at least energy wise every time. And the few different arrangements that were used all had their own kind of experimentation - different keys, different vibes, different order of instruments in certain parts - it's fascinating to see how Dylan works really. But even after all that, in the final performance included in the comp, Dylan returned to a somewhat original/usual arrangement of the song. Was this a plan all along? Or was it just a spontaneous decision that came eventually?
Looking forward to your thoughts here.
