A rare tornado was observed on a mountaintop in Montana, US, on May 9.

Tornadoes form under unstable weather conditions when warm humid air near the surface meets with cold, dry air above.

Mountains, however, generally have cool and stable air, making tornadoes a rare occurrence in mountainous regions.
