Hungry student destroys $120,000 artwork
A South Korean student who skipped breakfast eats a sculpture of a banana by Maurizio Cattelan.

A student from South Korea has eaten Comedian (2019), a contentious work by Maurizio Cattelan made out of bananas. So, how are things? He skipped breakfast and was now ravenously hungry.

A student at Seoul National University named Noh Huyn-soo visited the Leeum Museum of Art on a Sunday. In more ways than one, the artwork wowed him. He then taped the peel back on the fruit and told the museum staff that eating the fruit was an artistic performance.

The Korean Herald reported that Noh had said, "Damaging a piece of modern art could also be seen as a form of art." Leeum often switches out the banana every three to four days. Cattelan was informed of the situation but said nothing. The 2019 Art Basel Miami Beach debut of the sculpture caused a stir. The final price was around $120,000 USD.

Cattelan's banana sculpture has previously been devoured. In its first year, the sculpture was eaten by performance artist David Datuna, who then posted a photo of it to Instagram. Cattelan has a solo performance at the Leeum till July 16 called WE, which includes Comedian (2019).
