Description:
The National Tropical Botanical Garden (2019) claims that “Phyllostegia electra is endemic to the mesic and wet forests of Kauai and only rarely seen outside its habitat. Like other native Hawaiian plants, P. electra evolved in isolation and free of predators which is why it and Hawaii’s other 63 endemic mints lack the odorous oils that serve as a defense mechanism. Furthermore, P. electra is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and a focal species for achieving conservation objectives outlined in the Hawai‘i Strategy for Plant Conservation. It is not, however, protected by the Endangered Species Act.
With less than 50 known wild individuals growing in 15 subpopulations, P. electra was added to the University of Hawaii’s PEPP…threatened by feral pigs, goats, rats, and even slugs and snails…Phyllostegia electra fruits in the spring”
I observed that each fruit of P. electra splits into 4 seeds very easily. The fruit itself wasn’t very fleshy. Cleaning the seeds is tedious, and gushes out green liquid that stained my tray and gloves. The smaller seeds were fragile, and the bigger ones were harder. It dries out very quickly in comparison to a cut grape.

How I Do My Research:
I heavily rely on a park's details or an organization that has the information on plants. It would be a pdf file, on their website, a brochure, etc. inaturalist, and PlantNet are great identifying tools.

Disclaimer:
I am not an expert in botany, but rather 100% an amateur. Please correct me if I make a mistake or if you want to add some more information. And... just because a source SAYS you can eat DOES NOT mean that you absolutely should. Do your research!!! And please take a joke as a joke :)
