Voice coil linear motors (single phase motors) are based on a copper coil energized by an electric current and placed inside a magnetic field usually provided by permanent magnets. The force generated by the coil is proportional to the magnetic field and the direction and magnitude of the electric current. Since none of the components are touching, there is no friction and wear and the voice coil motors are especially well suited for scanning applications with high velocity and high repetition rates. Forces are usually in the 5N to 40N range, with typical effective motion ranges from 1mm to 25mm (1 inch).
Position feedback is through linear encoders and with a good closed-loop motion controller nanometer resolution is achievable. A voice-coil motor is a special form of linear motor with one instead of three phases.
