Veterans of the First World War discuss how they felt when they heard that there had been an armed rising in Ireland in 1916.

A number of Irish men who served in the British Army during the First World War describe their thoughts on hearing that back home Irish men had taken up arms against British rule.

One voice says,

When we heard of the Rising we felt we had been stabbed in the back.

Narrator Chris Curran says,

After the Somme, after the Rising it would no longer be possible for any Irish man to serve two masters. To keep a foot in two worlds. Serve king and people. And every Irish man must choose his side.
