How do you measure the strength of magnets? Pull force testing is a simple, straightforward method to determine just how strong a permanent magnet is.

Pull force, also known as pull strength or max force, is a common expression used to describe the magnetic strength of magnets. Magnets are tested then assigned a rating of pounds pull (or max force) to provide users with insight into the product’s strength and capability.
Magnetic pull strength measures the maximum holding strength of a magnet or magnetic assembly before it separates from a ferrous metal surface. Pull force can be measured in pounds or kilograms. The higher the pull strength number, the greater the strength of the product.
Does a magnet always hold the maximum number of pounds? No. What determines the strength of a magnet? Various circumstances and conditions may affect the strength and total weight a magnet holds. These conditions include:
• Differing thicknesses of steel, particularly steel surfaces less than one-half inch thick
• Types of steel composition or the total amount of ferrous metal in an object
• Whether the magnet is placed in a horizontal or vertical position
• Coatings or layers on the surface area, including paint or grease
• Uneven surfaces, including rust
As these variables and more can impact a magnetic strength, we always recommend testing the magnet for your particular application first. Our Magnet Experts are happy to help you select the correct magnet for your project or job.
