The Kappa - Japanese Mythology:
The reptiloid kami known as a kappa, also known as kawatar, is similar to the yokai found in traditional Japanese folklore. When they are not treated with reverence as gods, kappa can turn dangerous. Typically, they are portrayed as green, human-like creatures with webbed hands and feet and a carapace resembling a turtle on their backs.
If one encountered a kappa, there were thought to be a few ways to get away. Due to the Kappa's obsession with politeness, it will reciprocate a deep bow. This causes the water in the "dish" (sara) to spill on the kappa's head, forcing it to remain in the bowing position until the plate is filled again with water from the river it lives in. If someone refills it, the kappa will continue to serve them forever. The kappa's arms, which are easily separated from its body, are another weakness. If a kappa loses one arm, it will do good deeds or impart wisdom in exchange for its recovery.
