Aston Barrett Junior is the son of celebrated bass player, Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett, the founding father of the Wailers. This Roots Reggae musical outfit came together in the Jamaican capital, Kingston in the late 1960s. Some of its more prominent constituents were Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, all of which have since moved on to the musical stages of the Great Beyond.
Family Man had a strong vision for the band, as he felt it still had a place in the music industry after Bob, Bunny and Peter had left. Following Marley’s death in 1981, the band went into a tail-spin. Family Man and his brother, Carlton Barrett, among others struggled to control the rudder. The band was eventually stabilised and revamped in 1989, and the Wailers’ globetrotting mission of spreading peace, love and unity, took on a renewed sense of purpose.
During this time, Family Man began inviting Aston Barrett Junior to observe the band’s operations more keenly. A few years later, ill-health forced Family Man into retirement, and the younger Barrett took the reins. He told the #StarGazingwithShaunCainShow that he reluctantly accepted his father’s appointment. Aston Barrett Junior said he was comfortable being just a drummer and guitarist.
The new band manager is now proud of the direction in which the Wailers are moving. Since taking over, he has attracted the attention of Emilio Estefan, the husband of pop singer, Gloria Estefan. Emilio produced the Wailers’ most recent album - “One World – One Prayer”, and the collaboration brought them a Grammy nomination.
Although the Wailers did not win, Barret is satisfied with the attention the album has brought. He reveals that the band is getting ready to start working on its second album. Again, Emilio Estefan has been assigned co-producer responsibilities, which will be carried out at his state-of-the-art studios in Miami, Florida.
The Wailers are currently on the road fulfilling a schedule that will take them across the United States. They will also be heading to Hawaii and Brazil, next year.
The Wailers team comprises: Aston Barret Junior – manager, drummer, guitarist, Owen “Dreadie” Reid - guitarist, Junior "Jazz" Ferraria, Ann-Marie Thompson and Tamara Barnes - vocalists, Andres Lopez – Keyboardist, Leonard ‘Lenny’ Chen - Road Manager, Rich Alice - Stage Engineer, Anthony Donaldson - Sound Engineer, Shaun Wedderburne - Stage Technician, Matthew Dennison, Zach Mankoosoh - Stage Assistant, Aisha Barrett - Merchandise Personnel and Gibbert Mist, who drives them everywhere.
Together, they make it possible for great music to be deposited into the public domain.
