India's midday meal program is the largest free lunch school program in the world. The program was originally implemented to fix the problem of government grain surplus and reduce hunger in children.
"Power Lunch," a colorful animation, focuses on the program's impact on school attendance and the employment opportunities made available to poor or marginalized women who serve as cooks: It feeds 120 million schoolchildren and employs 2 million women.. The animation also shows how the program has reduced discrimination by allowing children of different castes to eat together.
The program is not without shortcomings, but "Power Lunch" concludes that it is still worth working on to get it right.
"Power Lunch" was produced by Mathilde Dratwa and based on the reporting of Rhitu Chatterjee. See all Rhitu's related reporting for this project here: [ Ссылка ]
