We caught up with Jake during their tour of the new album to ask him some questions about what he used on the album and what the difference was from the previous record.
Here is a transcript of the video:
What is your set-up on the tour and the new album?
Live I am playing SJC 5-piece kit, that is with a 14x8 snare. WE kind of did some different snares but that is the one I really remember because that is the one I play live. 12, 16, 18 floor, and as far as cymbals go, I play all Zildjian which is amazing. I play the 14" K/Z HiHats. K Top Z Bottom a Dyno Beat I believe. I have to remember the cymbals there are so many. 21" K Ride, I play a 22" K Ride, and 21" A Zildjian Armand Ride, and I also play 18" K Custom Hybrid China.
What is your favorite song to play on the new album?
There is one song on the new album called " When you see my friends" that we play live on this tour. There is a drum fill at the very beginning of it and it kind of kicks off the song. To me its epic and the guitarists come in very big. It's one that is really fun to play. It's a mid tempo type of song. A lot of cool sticking that I do. Also there is a song called "Priceless" and on that one as far as beat is a more fun song to play because it is little bit faster and more energetic and I like playing that one a lot.
What is the difference in your set-up from this album versus the previous one?
On the previous CD I didn't have a China cymbal. I wanted to incorporate that just for accents and just to have fun with it. I didn't use it as much live as on the record and also I used a DW drum kit on the last record as well. And I think all the cymbals were exactly the same. Except for certain songs I used a 22" or 24" A Zildjian Ping Ride.
What is one of the toughest challenges in the studio as a drummer?
Make sure it sounds big enough. Are kind of music, what we were going for in our last record, sounded huge and epic so we wanted the rim sound to be as big as possible that is why we went with the bigger drums that I have with SJC and we set up a ton of room mics and that was how we accomplished getting that rim sound. It was really cool.
What is next for Mayday Parade?
Tour, tour, tour! You know we just released the record a couple of weeks ago and we need to push it and keep touring and try to get people to listen to it and also just perform it so kids can come out and sing along with us.
