Rescue workers pulled out the bodies of 32 people after a launch capsized in the Buriganga River at Shyambazar in the capital on Monday morning. The bodies were retrieved from the river one after another as of 1:30pm while some other people still remained missing. The dead include women and children, said Fire Service and Civil Defence. The double-deck ‘Morning Bird’ launch coming from Munshiganj sank in the river after being hit by Chandpur-bound vessel ‘Mayur-2’ while anchoring the Kathpatti ghat around 9am. Witnesses said there were over 50 passengers in the launch. Although several passengers managed to swim ashore, many went missing. On information, members of Fire Service, River Police, Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Coast Guard rushed in and launched a rescue operation. Locals also joined them in the rescue operation while two helicopters of Bangladesh Air Force and Rapid Action Battalion also rushed in. A ship of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) also started for the spot from Narayanganj to take part in the rescue operation.
