Welcome back to ‘The Bible Says What?!?!’. Today I will summarize Exodus chapter 9, where Moses wrote about his dealings with Pharaoh. Moses began, ‘The Lord said to Moses, ‘Go to Pharaoh and tell him to let My people go. If he does not, tomorrow afternoon I will send a plague to kill the Egyptian’s livestock, horses, donkeys, camels, and sheep. But I will protect all of My people’s animals’. So Moses did as God commanded. Pharaoh said no, he would not let the people go. So God did what He said He was going to do. Pharaoh still did not let God’s people go.
The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, ‘throw ashes from a furnace into the air, and make sure Pharaoh sees you do that.’. So they did. Then boils and sores covered all the Egyptian people and the remaining animals. They could not even stand up because of the boils on their feet. But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart again.
The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, ‘Go have a meeting with Pharaoh. Tell him that I could have easily erased him and his people from the earth already, but I did not because I want to show him my power, and I want My name to be famous throughout the earth. Tell him that I brought him to power and raised him up as leader for this very purpose. Tell him that this time tomorrow I am sending a plague of hail and fire to rain down on the earth.’ So Moses and Aaron did what God commanded them. All the Egyptians who feared God took emergency actions to protect their slaves and their animals. Those who did not fear God ignored the warnings.
The next afternoon brought great destruction with it. Massive hailstones and fire decimated the land, except for Goshen, where God’s people lived. Pharaoh called for Moses and said, ‘this time I sinned. The Lord is the righteous one. My people and I are wicked. Please pray and ask God to stop this destruction.’ So Moses prayed, and God stopped the hail. But, as usual, Pharaoh changed his mind when he saw some relief, and hardened his heart again. He would not let the people go.
The most important verses in this chapter are Exodus 9:15-16, which state, ‘For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the earth. And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.’
The thing I think the Lord wants us to understand after reading this chapter is that he made a clear distinction between His people and the people of the world. And God wants us to see that He was the one who gave Pharaoh the power and authority to rule over the Egyptians, and to enslave His people. We don’t normally think that way. We don’t want to consider the possibility that God allows bad things to happen for specific reasons, for His glory. But the Bible clearly teaches that this is true and real.
God gives bad kings power and authority? God allows bad things to happen? Yes, He does. One day He might even allow us to know why. Repent for your sin, and place your faith in Jesus for salvation. Jesus humbled himself and died on a cross as my substitute, and your substitute, and God raised Jesus from the dead. We broke God’s law. Jesus paid our fine. He also conquered hell and death, and His return is near. God said if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and if you believe in your heart that He raised Jesus from the dead, you would be saved. Why don’t you do that right now?
