Purandaradasar says chanting of mantra, pilgrimage, the dip in holy rivers, prayers, keeping fast, vow of silence and the like by the bad people are not going to be useful to them unless they carry out all these actions with a pure mind. Those who leave all their bad qualities and have good behaviour with devotion to God, will only attain eternal bliss. The bad qualities of the people and their bad behaviour are like the inherent bitterness of neem leaves. Its nature will not change even if it is mixed with jaggery which tastes sweet naturally. So too, when a poisonous snake is fed with non poisonous milk, it will continue to be venomous.
Shri Purandaradasar was one of the main composers of Dasa Sahitya which is the literature of bhakthi movement. He was considered the Sangeeta pitamaha of Carnatic music. His supreme knowledge, devotion, and dispassion made him a role model for all Haridasas who succeeded him. This was well expressed by his own Guru Shri Vyasarajar’s words as “Dasarendare Purandaradasaru” meaning all the qualities of a true servant of God are inherent in Purandaradasar. He formulated the basic lessons of teaching Carnatic music through swaravalis, janti swaras and alankaras. He made a strong impression on the cultural life of the masses. He taught them the way of leading a simple life in a musical form through his kritis. His songs deal with social reform and points out the defects in the society. He stresses on the pure bhakthi and total self surrender to Him.
