"The situation may slip out of control and fall into a vicious circle. We deem it necessary that instead of flexing military muscles and using the situation as a pretext for solving geopolitical tasks by military means, the focus should be on what the Security Council calls for, namely the creation of conditions for the resumption of the six-party talks."

STORYLINE:
The Russian foreign minister on Friday warned both North and South Korea against taking steps that would aggravate the current tense and hostile situation in the region.
Sergey Lavrov said that Russia backed the UN resolution condemning North Korean nuclear tests and missile launches, and emphasised the need for a quick resumption of six-party talks intended to resolve the stalemate.
Lavrov added that Russia was concerned about a unilateral "build-up of military activity", an apparent reference to joint US-South Korean military drills.
"The situation may slip out of control and fall into a vicious circle," he said.
"Instead of flexing military muscles and using the situation as a pretext for solving geopolitical tasks by military means, the focus should be on what the Security Council calls for, namely the creation of conditions for the resumption of the six-party talks," he said.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un warned on Friday that his military forces were ready "to settle accounts with the US", according to state television.
It was the latest round of rhetoric from Pyongyang after US nuclear-capable B-2 bombers dropped dummy munitions in joint military drills with South Korea.
Kim's warning is just the latest in a litany of threats against the south, and don't indicate an imminent war.
But the threats from North Korea and rising animosity between the rivals that have followed UN sanctions over Pyongyang's nuclear test in February were raising concerns that they may escalate into a skirmish.
