Single-pointing an M12 x 1.75 thread on leaded steel bar on the lathe, machining studs for a tube mandrel which I'll need for an upcoming project. For a change, I'm not doing it Joe Pieczynski style with an inverted tool and the lathe in reverse, this is more of the traditional Abom79 or Keith Rucker lightning cross-slide withdrawal technique, although I guess Adam would start with a five-pound block of HSS and make a superbly-honed masterpiece of a cutting tool, rather than this fairly cheap carbide insert. I'm hopeless at freehand grinding, as with almost everything in machining, so inserts it is then.
As this is free-machining material and that is a mighty carbide insert, I'm going straight in. Controversial? None of that 29.5 degree approach malarkey, it really doesn't matter with these inserts. Force of habit persuaded me to use a splash of Dykem, just for the smell really... Six of these to do, with a shorter thread and shoulder the other end. Full length video to follow once I've finished the tube mandrel.
