A damper operated by a difference in pressure rather than a motorized actuator. One common application is a relief damper in an economizer system. When operating an economizer, the supply fan draws all of its air from outside the building, creating a positive pressure inside. This pressure then pushes a barometric relief damper open, neutralizing the pressure differential between inside and outside. Another common application is a backdraft damper in a fan-powered VAV box. In this case, the operation of the box fan creates a negative pressure in the box with respect to the surrounding plenum. This negative pressure inside the box pulls the barometric damper open, allowing plenum air to be recirculated to the space.
