Diabetes eye screening is very important part of diabetic care. Diabetes can affect other parts of the body. It can effect lungs, heart ,kidney ,nervous system and eyes. Eye like camera it has lens in the front and film behind that film is called retina. This retina has blood vessels which get effected in diabetes. Picking up the changes in blood vessels of retina is called diabetic retinopathy screening.
If you look at the incidents of diabetic retinopathy almost 70 to 80% of diabetic patients after 10 to 15 years will have diabetic retinopathy changes. These why all diabetic patients need to have diabetic eye screening periodically.Generally diabetic screening is recommended once a year. This may change with type of diabetes. In type 1 diabetes which usually happens in children and young age group ,screening is usually starts about 5 years after the onset of the diabetes. There after that once a year. In type 2 diabetes screening needs to done at the time of diagnosis after that once a year. If doctor finds any eye changes frequency of screening changes.
It is like a regular eye check up. Some drops will be put in eyes to dilate the pupil to be able to see the retina. Once retina is examined all the diabetic changes can be observed. These are documented by taking certain photographs. These can be taken by without dilating retina by just taking pictures and sending them to eye specialist for examination.
