Prof. Danielle Allen of Harvard University joins IHS President & CEO Emily Chamlee-Wright for a frank and wide-ranging conversation on the meaning and history of freedom, from the American founding to today. Allen discusses the enduring importance of the Declaration of Independence, and the importance of discussing what the Founding Fathers and the Framers of the Constitution got right, and what they got wrong. They also discuss some of the core challenges that face our democracy, including the challenge of finding governance solutions that respect individual rights and autonomy, the importance of federalism and local governance, the need for robust civil society institutions, and threats to the liberal project from illiberal ideas on both the left and right. They discuss the challenge of political polarization in the U.S. today, and how constructive conversations and dialogue among people with divergent political views is essential in a peaceful and free society. At the end, Allen answers questions submitted by the audience. Q&A was moderated by Dr. Bradley Jackson, Senior Program Officer at IHS.

Danielle Allen is the James Bryant Conant University Professor at Harvard University, and director of Harvard’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics. She is a political theorist who has published broadly in democratic theory, political sociology, and the history of political thought. Widely known for her work on justice and citizenship in both ancient Athens and modern America, Allen is the author of many books, including "Our Declaration: A Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Defense of Equality."

In 2020 Allen was named a Distinguished Fellow for the Study of Liberalism and a Free Society at the Institute for Humane Studies.
