Hello YouTube!!! Welcome to the ninth episode of season six of RobGioMegacollabs! For this episode, we are going to be ranking Squarepusher’s ninth album, Just a Souvenir and its companion EP, Numbers Lucent. Just a Souvenir is an album where Tom Jenkinson wanted the majority of it to consist of his "own version of jazz fusion" with the help of classical guitar, math rock, and funk recordings. On top of that, the creation of this album came to mind when Jenkinson experienced a daydream in which he envisioned a rock band performing a concert against the backdrop of a large, glowing coat hanger. In my opinion, however, even though it's not among his best work, I also don't think it's as mediocre or even as bad as some people make it out to be. It has its fair share of low moments like Tensor in Green, so it's not particularly great consistently, but tracks like Star Time 2, The Coathanger, Delta-V, and Quadrature are just the best examples of its fair amount of eclecticism that this project displays. Overall, while its mixing is not the best by any means, I still think this is a good album all-around. Check this out if you wish! On the other side with Numbers Lucent, while its artwork is similar to its predecessor, this project has a more accessible tinge to it than that project as well, as the six tracks presented here are more uptempo and energetic (especially Illegal Dustbin). This EP also has a strong callback to the sounds of breakcore and most notably early 1990s rave. It even actually samples early rave tunes from the likes of Rhythm Section, Acen Razvi, and even The Prodigy somehow. As for what I think about this project, unlike Budakhan Mindphone where it's not any better than Music Is Rotted One Note as a whole, I think this EP is a fair bit better than Just a Souvenir as a whole because I feel like this one actually carries the sounds of that album as well. On top of that, it does a nice job at combining the sounds of early 1990s rave with his state-of-the-art glitchy jazz sound, with Paradise Garage being the best representation of that. If you think it's not any better than Just a Souvenir, that's fine. But to me, it's so solid of a project that it kind of borders on great for me. Go give it a listen if you'd like!!! Anyways, enjoy!!!
