I'm working on my 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 with the Cummings Diesel and Automatic Transmission.
I have been having Late shifting and other strange shifting issues.
The truck has a little over 117k on it.
Replacing the Governor Solenoid and Sensor Is the Answer to most of the odd shifting troubles with these Dodge Trucks.
I ordered the parts.
But the truck took a turn for the worse. It got so bad it wouldn't shift even by coaxing it with the shifter.
I went ahead and did a fluid and filter change.
I changed the fluid with atf-4 approved fluid and a filter change (filter is supposed to last the life of the trans, but I changed it anyway)
This is a pretty easy job if you are afraid of it leaking after just re-use the factory gasket and it wont leak. It'll say to re-use it right on the pan.
I extracted some of the fluid through the dipstick tube first to make less of a mess.
Than I added a drain plug to the pan. Not recommended for stump jumpers.
I wouldn't have done it either but I might need to change the governor solenoid. After viewing Cascades video,I felt I could do it easily.
My hope was that the partial fluid change would help to free up the sticking components.
And it was so bad I had to do something while waiting for the parts I had on order.
The pan was clean inside and only a small amount of fine gray fillings on the magnet the color of a semi metallic brake pad and most likely normal clutch material.
Fluid and filter did the trick and it started shifting perfectly right away.
I thought my troubles where over since it now was shifting smoother than it had in quite a while.
One week later. after sitting for a couple of days it did it again. and this time it seemed more exaggerated. It produced the p0700 code, a general transmission error(No check engine light I just cycled the key for codes)
You would need a more in depth reader likely only at a dealer or trans shop to further break it down.
Note: At first this problem didn't throw any codes.
My parts had arrived and I had a hunch they would do some good. so I installed them.
This brings us to this video.
Job Done.
So far so good it seems to be working as hoped.
Drives and shifts perfectly.
It took about 3 weeks of driving with no faults for the system to clear its own code.
