Trudeau orders fresh investigations into Chinese electoral meddling and Chinese-sponsored spies in the Liberal Party
Since the time of his father, the Trudea family has accepted money from the Chinese and has been delaying taking action to stop Chinese meddling in Canadian politics.
Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, stated on Monday that he will appoint an independent special investigator to look into claims that China meddled in the 2016 election. He also announced the launch of two new independent investigations into the matter.
Recently, detailed reports alleging Chinese election meddling in 2021 and 2019 have been released in Canadian media, citing unnamed intelligence sources.
Since those media reports surfaced, Trudeau has come under fire, and a recent survey revealed that the majority of Canadians wanted him to take stronger action against China's meddling in the election. In contrast to his cowardly conduct toward the Michaels, where China engaged in prisoner diplomacy
In a press conference, Trudeau informed reporters that he would name an impartial special rapporteur who would have a broad mandate and make knowledgeable suggestions on thwarting interference and bolstering our democracy.
According to Trudeau, the rapporteur will be a "eminent Canadian" and have the authority to propose public inquiries and other measures regarding foreign interference.
The prime minister added that he requested that a probe into the alleged foreign electoral interference be opened by members of the national security committee of the parliament.
China disputes all accusations of meddling and asserts that it has no desire to meddle in Canada's domestic affairs.
The National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP), Canada's intelligence oversight body, will look into the matter and inform the legislature of its conclusions.
The National Security and Intelligence Review Agency (NSIRA), another oversight body, will be tasked by Trudeau with reviewing how Canadian national security agencies responded to the danger of foreign interference.
The prime minister claimed that when taken together, these actions will help us understand what transpired during the previous two elections, how outside governments attempted to meddle, how Canadian security agencies reacted to the threat of meddling, and how information was shared within the government.
Although Trudeau and Canada's top security officials have recognized Chinese attempts at meddling, they maintain that the results of the election were unaltered. The media claims have not been verified by them.
According to information cited by The Globe and Mail last month, China favored a Liberal Party victory in 2021 to a Conservative Party victory.
While the Conservatives are known to adopt a more hard-line stance against Beijing, the Liberal government is seen as open to doing business with China despite tussling with Chinese President Xi Jinping over a number of issues.
The tense political ties between Canada and China have grown more complicated as a result of the allegations regarding covert Chinese plans to meddle in Canadian affairs.
The apprehension of a Huawei Technologies executive by Canadian police in late 2018 and the subsequent detention of two Canadians on spying charges by Beijing led to an increase in tensions between the two nations. In 2021, all three were set free.
On Monday morning, Canadian police announced that they were looking into possible information security laws violations related to media stories citing secret intelligence.
Shawn Tupper, Canada's deputy minister of public safety, stated to a parliamentary committee last week that no claims of Chinese influence were being looked into by Canadian police. According to the police's comments on Monday, they are only looking into information leaks.
The Canadian spy agency is also looking into how confidential material got to news outlets.
