THE PROMETHEUS PROJECT:
BEETHOVEN’S NINE SYMPHONIES
May 10-19, 2018 at Severance Hall
Ludwig van Beethoven, the composer who, more than any other, changed music, wrote nine symphonies that jolted music out of itself. Life could never – would never – be the same again. Every musician that followed him has been shaped by his influence. Beethoven challenged the existing “classical” rationality of music--structure, harmony, form, orchestration—and exploded it into a world of open-ended possibility. Today, nearly 200 years after his death, his music is still regarded as an extraordinary achievement—among the outer limits of human accomplishment.
As Prometheus was the first to transform humanity by giving human beings the gift of fire from the gods, Beethoven was the first to truly unleash the very essence of our human spirit—its bold passions, its euphoric joy, its intensity and despair—and express its essence through music.
Enjoy this rare opportunity to experience all of Beethoven’s symphonies together in a grand final celebration of The Cleveland Orchestra’s Second Century.
