China is bracing for Typhoon Yagi, which intensified on Wednesday night and is expected to make landfall on the Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong province early Friday morning. China's National Meteorological Center launched a red alert for Typhoon Yagi, saying that it grew into a strong typhoon on Wednesday afternoon.
As the 11th typhoon of the year, Yagi will bring severe winds and heavy rainfall to Zhanjiang, a coastal city in western Guangdong.
Authorities in Zhanjiang, Guangdong issued a yellow typhoon warning on Wednesday night, urging all relevant departments to take immediate measures.
Zhanjiang’s education department has ordered all schools to close on Thursday.
Xitou Town in Yangxi County, Yangjiang City, has 1,642 fishing vessels, all now safely in port.
In China’s holiday island of Hainan, all trains and high-speed rail services will stop from 6 p.m. Thursday, and flights departing after 8 p.m. will be canceled until Friday midnight.
