The problem is that most balconies have little use, because they’re too small, too public and too scary. The solutions are:
- make them at least six feet deep,
- recess them into the building, and,
- give them privacy.
These solutions come from Christopher Alexander’s Pattern 167 for Six Foot Balconies. The Covid lockdowns of 2020 reminded us that private balcony gardens are highly desirable.
