- JOHAN RENVALL, a former principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, has a career that spans more than 23 years.
Mr. Renvall's distinguished career, as one of only a small group of elite dancers the world has known, began in 1972 when he was admitted to the Royal Swedish Ballet School. He then became a member of The Royal Swedish Ballet in 1977.
In 1978, he joined the world-renowned American Ballet Theater. That same year, Mr. Renvall was chosen by Anthony Tudor to dance the leading roles in two of his ballets--Undertow and Shadowplay. After only three years, Mr. Renvall was promoted to soloist, and in 1987 was promoted to the rank of principal dancer. Mr. Renvall held this position until he retired in 1996.
In addition to his bravura dancing and dramatic sensitivity, Mr. Renvall is also an accomplished choreographer. Throughout his career, Mr. Renvall has choreographed ballets that have received both critical and audience acclaim. Mr. Renvall made his choreographic debut with an abridged version of Romeo and Juliet at The Aspen Ballet Festival in 1984.
Since then Mr. Renvall has choreographed an array of ballets including Tango which premiered at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in 1990. Mr. Renvall's other works include Persnickety (1987), Between the Lines (1994), and Perpetual Cycles (1996) for The New Jersey Ballet. In 1996, Mr. Renvall choreographed Cinderella for the Alabama Ballet/Ballet South. Companies around the United States are currently performing several of the ballets.
Mr. Renvall's career accomplishments also include the coveted Silver Medal at the prestigious International Ballet Competition at Varna, Bulgaria in 1978, as well as the leading role in the feature film Dance in 1987. Prior to launching his career as a ballet dancer, Mr. Renvall was a figure skater who won both the Swedish and Scandinavian Championships
