Weeks after winning the Gold Cup on Best Mate, Jim Culloty completed a famous big-race double aboard the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained 20-1 chance. Culloty had only received the call-up for the ride earlier in the week when Jamie Goldstein was stood down with a broken leg.
Successful owner Ray Mould paid an emotional tribute afterwards to his wife Jenny, who had died of cancer in November 2000, but admitted that she would probably not have allowed him to run Bindaree in the race.
