On Wednesday, the president officially swore in the new government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Poland, completing a significant shift in power after eight years of nationalist rule.
Following a period marked by tensions between Warsaw and Brussels under the previous Law and Justice (PiS) party-led government, the selection of former European Council President Tusk has generated optimism for more harmonious relations with the European Union.
In an address to parliament on Tuesday, Tusk pledged to secure frozen EU funds amounting to billions of euros for Poland, which had been withheld due to concerns about the rule of law.
However, his mission may face challenges due to judges appointed under PiS reforms, criticized for compromising the independence of the courts, and the authority held by President Andrzej Duda, a PiS ally, to veto legislation.
"As I head to the swearing-in ceremony at the presidential palace, I remain optimistic," Tusk shared with reporters. "I am hopeful that despite differing paths and experiences, we share common goals. There is no doubt that our collective focus should be on serving Poland."
