Spain's eastern regions experienced significant flooding in early June 2024, primarily affecting the Balearic Islands, particularly Mallorca, and parts of southeastern mainland Spain, including Murcia. The deluge began on June 11th, with Mallorca bearing the brunt of the storm. The island witnessed record-breaking rainfall, with Palma de Mallorca Airport receiving over 53 liters per square meter in a short period. This heavy precipitation overwhelmed drainage systems, leading to widespread flooding in low-lying areas and urban centers.
The flooding caused significant disruptions at Palma de Mallorca Airport, a critical hub for tourism in the region. Floodwaters inundated parts of the terminal building, forcing cancellations and delays for over 100 flights. Thankfully, no major injuries were reported.
While Mallorca received the most media attention, mainland Spain also faced flooding concerns. Southeastern regions, particularly Murcia, experienced heavy rainfall that caused rivers and streams to overflow. This led to flooding in streets and homes, causing property damage and transportation disruptions.
