Hoffmann hides to eavesdrop on Crespel, Antonia's father. Despite Crespel's orders, Frantz admits Dr. Miracle, the doctor whose evil treatments led to the death of Antonia's mother. Dr. Miracle insists on examining Antonia for symptoms of her mother's disease. When Crespel refuses to allow the examination, Dr. Miracle summons Antonia's spirit to diagnose her from a distance. Hoffmann is horrified to discover Antonia's fatal condition.
