Hi Kim Smart with Smart Interiors located in sunny San Diego. Kitchens are the heart of the home and they also help to sell homes. If you’re not careful, kitchen remodeling costs can spiral out of control quickly. I have renovated hundreds of kitchens and I am going to share with you some suggested areas to splurge — and where you can save money. Let’s get into it.
The #1 Splurge you should make is an exotic stone for your counter tops. Think about it - this is the first thing people see. Exotic surfaces make a big first impression and can set the tone of the space. A kitchen island, in particular, deserves the splurge. This is the gathering and entertainment hub in most kitchens, it’s highly visible and utilized. So top it with something special.
Where you can save is Cabinets. There’s definitely a case to be made for investing in the best cabinets you can afford — they consume more than 75% of your kitchen space. Custom cabinets for a standard-sized kitchen can cost upwards of $40,000, whereas ready-to-assemble cabinets can look amazing for a fraction of the price. Add custom doors and side panels to basic cabinet boxes to give your cabinets a one-of-a-kind look. Other options would be to refinish or reface your existing cabinets. I made a video on this specific topic and it will guide you on the best option for you.
The #2 splurge is cabinet Hardware and plumbing fixtures. Spring for bling! You need just a few high-quality pieces for cabinetry to add the finishing touch — almost like jewelry adds to your wardrobe. Every day it’s in your hands so it needs to have a nice touch to it. Better hardware and plumbing fixtures also stand up to daily use and abuse.
Where you can save is Appliances. It’s not necessary to break the bank on top-of-the-line brands like SubZero or Wolf. You’re not compromising a well-designed kitchen if you opt for mid- and upper-range brands like Bosch, GE and Jenn Air. Just don’t be tempted by bells and whistles, which add unnecessary cost. Very few people need or use all the features. The best isn’t the best if it doesn’t serve your needs.
The #3 splurge is Backsplash. This is my favorite area to splurge, even on a budget kitchen, as there are so many wonderful tile options out there now, and a little bit of special tile goes a long way. Plus, installation generally costs the same whether you buy a tile you love or a so-so tile that you’re not happy with.
Where you can save is on a Sink. Although the kitchen sink sees tons of action, it’s not necessary to spend a lot on one, especially if it’s an under-mount. There are many perfectly good sinks for as little as $300-$500. Do, however, spring for a faucet you love — especially a pull-out model that makes washing dishes so much easier. A quality faucet is worth the investment.
My last splurge is cabinet under-mount lighting. Dazzling, dangling fixtures are always admired. Under-mounted lights usually generate less enthusiasm. Under-mount lighting is the workhorse that lights-up counter prep areas — it’s essential because you use it every day. And since it requires serious electrical work, it’s not easy to add later. Follow these tips and you will be on your way to maximizing the look of your kitchen and getting the most for your dollars. Don’t forget to like and subscribe – and please leave me a comment.
