Mr Mohan Kumar, Consultant Gynaecologist, says if you have excessive menstrual bleeding, bleeding in between periods, or bleeding while postmenopausal, you may need a hysteroscopy. It can be done while you're awake under local anaesthetic or as a day case operation under a short general anaesthetic.
During the procedure a small camera is passed inside of the womb to see if there are any polyps such as skin tags or fibroids. If they are present, they will be removed at the same time and sent to the lab to be examined under a microscope, along with the womb lining sample. A follow-up appointment will be arranged to discuss treatment options.
