Metroidvainia is a term that has become standard in a gamer's vocabulary to describe a particular sub-genre of action game. Taken from the names of the Metroid and Castlevania series, these games use a number of elements from these games such as having an open world/map interconnected by a number of different areas, an inability to access a number of these areas early in the game and the acquisition of skills or weapons that subsequently allow the player to progress to these areas.
