The original Kingston Trio of Bob Shane, Dave Guard, and Nick Reynolds play a late 1950s update of a 19th century Norwegian-American folk-styled song by Ditmar Meidell. Meidell's original was a commentary on an attempt to create a New World Utopia by Norwegian visionary Ole Bull. The colony failed, but Bull's vision of freedom and prosperity lived on in both Norwegian and English in this song.
The KT version here takes only the chorus from the original. Composers Harvey Geller and Mark Seligson tried to create an amusing comment in the lyric based on topical events in the 1950s.
This song appeared on the Trio's third studio album "Here We Go Again", which like the two LPs before it and the two after it hit the #1 spot on the Billboard charts for an extended period, in this case twelve weeks.
