Have you ever wondered why the patterns on your clothes don’t match at the seams? Today we launch Inside Out, a new series where we answer all your questions about the fashion industry. In this episode, we explore the question of why clothing patterns seem to break at the seams.

The reason is manufacturing process. 🪡

A garment can be broken out into different pieces. For a pant, for example, you have the front and back panels, the waistband, the pockets etc. These pieces all have to be cut out from the fabric. At a manufacturing facility, a template known as a “marker” is first created, to lay out all the different pieces and optimize fabric usage. Then, the pieces are cut using the marker. ✂️

Because the marker is optimized for fabric usage (i.e. reducing waste), and not pattern alignment, you’ll often end up with pieces where the patterns don’t match exactly. 👘

It’s a trade-off between cost, fabric waste, and aesthetics. ⚖️
